Our Story

It all began with a story my father shared, a tale of a remarkable man whose legacy had woven through generations. This man, a former slave of Virginia's tobacco fields, held roots that would stretch from Lakeland and Ybor City Florida to the island of Hispaniola, now known as the Dominican Republic and even roots that would go through The Bahamas. His mother, a skilled tobacco farmer taught by her mother, nurtured and crafted cigars for esteemed statesmen in Virginia as her mother before did. His grandmother, a descendant of African royalty, was brought to the Dominican Republic to cultivate and harvest tobacco as a slave. Later during the Revolutionary War, she was relocated to Virginia, where she continued her craft for the elite. As grandma Charlotte and her daughter settled and grew wiser in craft; a new generation was birthed. Grandma Charlotte began to teach and pass her mastery of growing, harvesting, and crafting fine tobacco and cigars to her grandchildren.

Of her grandchildren, there was one that stood out, one she would later name after an important piece of her African heritage. With pride I’m sure, she bestowed the name Cubit to her grandson; naming him after the African measurement her forefathers had used to build their African kingdoms. She hoped it would carry him to build one of his own someday. The legend of Cubit Nixon began as he learned farming and the graceful art of fine tobacco crafting and its profound connection to his family's history. Additionally, he learned how to be a forward-thinking leader, ways he could uplift his community, and how to build lifelong relationships especially the ones that only a good cigar could bring together. The family eventually settled on the western central coast of Florida, making their home in Gadsden County and later the greater Tampa and Lakeland areas. There, Cubit embarked on his journey to leave an indelible mark on the world, just as his grandmother had urged him to do. Over his remarkable 107-year life, he became a distinguished businessman, a landowner, an appointed state representative during the era of reconstruction, a state treasurer, as well as a deputy sheriff and I’m sure he did all this while enjoying a fine Nixon cigar he hand rolled himself. Nonetheless, one thing is for sure, that throughout his extraordinary accomplished life, he relished the finest tobacco from his fields, grown and aged it to perfection, and then shared amongst cherished friends and family.

Now four generations later our family continues to live out Cubit’s dream and hope for his family then and to come by aspiring to live long lives full of education, humanely treated for their character, content, and work, as well as to fight and serve hard for the generations to come so they could have a better world. I believe he lived that and exemplified that daily in his life and thus building a Nixon legacy for generations to come.

With this enduring hope and multiple generations of Nixon cigars enjoyed within our family, we extend this pleasure back to you and your esteemed company. May the timeless legend of Cubit Nixon live through the ages, passed seamlessly from one generation to the next.
